Wheel of Fortune host John Burgess, 79, reveals severe battle with sepsis that ‘almost killed him’

Wheel of Fortune host John Burgess has opened up about his recent battle with sepsis.

The legendary game show host, 79, battled the life-threatening illness after suffering a ‘serious bacterial infection’ in February.

‘At first I felt maybe a bit nauseous, bit drowsy, achy in the joints and pretty soon I just felt like I was going to throw up,’ he told the Courier Mail.

‘That was at seven o’clock in the morning and by 7.30 I couldn’t get off the toilet, so my second son had to lift me off the toilet and carry me into the bedroom.’

John’s wife Gianna then called an ambulance and he was rushed to hospital, where he spent four days in ICU.

He credits his survival to his wife’s decision to call an ambulance.

However, John said he still experiences symptoms such as hair loss and low energy.

John is best known for hosting Wheel of Fortune alongside Adriana Xenides from 1984 to 1996.

Adriana sadly died in 2010 at the age of 54 after suffering a ruptured intestine.

After a successful and lengthy stint on Seven’s Wheel of Fortune, John moved over to Nine to host Catchphrase from 1997 to 2003.

One of the last times John was pictured in public was in December 2019, when he was spotted posing alongside former Married At First Sight star Dino Hira at Nine’s Perth studio.

The presenter, formerly know as ‘Baby John’ due to his young age when joining the media industry, stood in a charming photo with the beaming reality star.

Despite his mature age, John looked fit and vibrant in a stylish bright yellow shirt.

Dino shared the photo to Instagram, captioning it: ‘How can you not crack a smile and appreciate the day when you bump into Australia’s longest serving TV game show host and one of my favourites, Burgo!’

‘Much respect to him for his talent and work ethic!’ he said.
