Lurking within the commonly used paper receipt is an endorphine disruptor that is related to a variety of dangerous health effects in the human body. And the worst part? You’re exposed on a daily basis, without even being aware of it.
Bisphenol A, commonly refered to as BPA, is a chemical found in paper receipts, with the purpose to allow for inkless printing; which in itself sounds pretty harmless. As you may have heard in recent media, however, there’s a lot of controvercy surrounding the use of BPA in everyday products… and with good reason, should you ask us.
One such product is the water bottle. Have you, for example, ever noticed how certain water bottles have expiration dates? Well, this is related to the fact that some water bottles contain BPA, and it is believed that over the course of time, the plastic breaks down and BPA leeches into the contents of the bottle, increasing exposure.
Through extensive research, we at The Zeipt Project have also dug up some unsettling information about the chemical, that surely sent shivers down our spines: Due to the phenolic structure of BPA, the chemical interacts with estrogen receptors in our bodies, temporarily increasing the estrogen levels.

But what exactly does this translate to in terms of health effects? Well, for starters it increases the chances for both female and male infertility, precocious puberty, neurological problems, childhood asthma, polycyctic ovary syndrome (PCOS), metabolic diseases, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. But the list doesn’t stop there. BPA is also linked to hormone dependent tumours such as prostate and breast cancer… Yikes! What a mouthful!
A lot of major companies have in recent years started advertising their products as being “BPA-free”, aknowleding the dangers of the chemical. But as more and more companies take action to reduce the use of the dangerous chemical in household products, there’s still little, to no talk about the dangers of handling paper receipts containing the harmful chemical.
So, now that you’re aware of the destructive effects the chemical has on our bodies, how do you feel about the fact that every time you touch a paper receipt, you immediately start absorbing the chemical through your fingertips? And when touching a paper receipt with wet fingers, the absorption increases by a multiplier of 100! Unsettling, right?

The alarming truth behind paper receipts is an issue we cannot stress enough. The usage of paper receipts isn’t only destructive for our environment, but it also poses a dangerous risk to our health. In one report, workers in retail industries where paper receipts are handled frequently had 30 percent more BPA in their bodies than the average U.S adult.
Personally, we think this is completely unnaceptable, and that a change is desperately needed. We’ve all heard the saying “The devil is in the details”, and in this particular case, we couldn’t believe that saying to be more accurate.
So the next time you’re posed with an option, choose health; Choose digital receipts.
