Meditation is very often misidentified. People imagine Tibetan Monks with sitting and chanting in the cave. Sacrifice, boredom, wasting time, weirdness. I discovered another side of the coin.

In spite of deep culture and spirituality, behind meditation strongly stands a ‘’Mother Science’’. Science about the human body.

I am going to describe shortly the most obvious facts about meditation and how it does influence us.

Meditation decreases your resting heart rate.

Your resting heart rate is related mostly to your body weight and the general condition of your cardiovascular system. It adjusts to circumstances and can be influenced by stress, activity, and emotions.

Heart rate can be controlled also by breathing. The faster you breathe, the higher your heart rate. The slower you breathe, the lower your heart rate.

There is a proverb which says: ” breathe less, live longer”. A tortoise lives a long life and breathes 2–4 times per minute. Look at the dog. Breathes fast and enjoys a much shorter life. Lower heart rate tells you that your body works effortlessly.

During meditation, your heart rate can drop even to a few breaths per minute. Accordingly, your resting heart rate will decrease even to 30 percent below your usual rate.

Once your session gets over, heart rate comes back to your normal state. But meditation influences not only your heart rate. The entire nervous system, hormones level, and mental approach change.

Meditation distresses.

Lower heart rate calms your body down. You simply can not be stressed out if your heart rate is low. It’s physically not possible. Heart responses to hormones. Hormones can be influencers or transmitters. The very two most important hormones which influence your heart are Adrenaline and Oxytocin.

Adrenaline increases your heart rate to mobilize your body when it comes to the necessity of taking an action. During meditation level of this hormone drops.

Oxytocin is the next hormone which influences our body. It’s a hormone of love, freedom, fulfillment, and pleasure. During meditation level of this hormone rises.

Written by Swedish physiologist Kerstin Uvnäs Moberg book titled ”Tapping the Hormone of Calm, Love, and Healing” is a good lecture for those who are interested in the topic.

These two hormones play a major role when it comes to your state. ”Fight or fly” or ”chill and feel”.

Meditation and mindfulness.

Probably you feel sometimes distracted, not able to focus on your tasks, not satisfied, not sure, anxious, nervous? For sure everyone does. If you are mindful — you will notice when these negative states appear. If you are not living in the presence only dwelling on your past experiences and are stressed about your future you’ll feel negative emotions. The response is frustration.

Who wants to be frustrated? Of course no one. Mindfulness is a skill that allows you to stay present and see the world as it is. Mindful people see opportunity. Frustrated people see obstacles. Aware people take care of themselves and their family. Lost people develop addiction and waste time.

Meditation is good for you.

Maybe you were thinking wrong about the meditation. Maybe you hadn’ t any opinion. Hope that short article described benefits and you don’t think anymore that it’s only a spiritual experience. Personally, for me, it’s purely physical. It’s a form of activity as any other which can effectively influence my body. It’s a field where everyone can find something which works. Calmness, stress relief, time for planning, etc. Based on my own experience I believe that nowadays meditation can be a part of a sustainable and healthy lifestyle.
