For startup founders, focusing on change and novelty isn’t a 9–5, Monday-Friday job. With chaotic agendas, endless days, and relentless nights, it’s important to set aside time to take care of your health, wellness, and of course getting some much-needed shut-eye.
Despite the best of intentions, many abandon their laundry list of self-improvements. Thus, we’d like to layout some pre-holiday inspiration that you can return to no matter the calendar date.
Applying Wellness to Entrepreneurship
In general, startup founders are ambitious, driven individuals who will go the extra mile to reach success. In reaching those goals, founders must look to themselves as investors- in terms of their own growth and well-being. This is an essential part of the entrepreneurship journey.
As an accelerator, we are privy to meeting some of the brightest people when they’re in high-pressure situations while navigating the future of their company. In order to keep the flow and mood positive, we have curated a program that emphasizes the importance of having a sturdy foundation to fall back on when stress levels hit the fan. We recognize that stress can be contagious and the toll is enormous, both personally and professionally.
Maintaining wellness is a deep connection to your inner being. It is being in tune with your body and mind, and recognizing how the two work in tandem. It is about making a commitment to yourself to rise an hour early to clear your mind or packing your gym bag in advance so as not to skip out on that post-office workout you’ve been meaning to make. It is taking a brisk walk when you’re feeling stressed. It is being gentle with yourself when you face an overload of work. It is balanced, it is cultivating daily habits, it is a lifestyle choice.
There is a common expression, “If you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter.” We know that every day — whether you are 100% or not — you just have to get up and go. By just showing up, you will feel better. Now, we aren’t saying to go into work when you are ill or have hit a wall — take the time you need to rest. We’re talking about the “off” days we all experience, when a little boost is needed.
Having some tricks up your sleeve to help you show up is where we come in.
Being mindful means being present and in the moment. By choosing and outfitting your business goals to your personal goals and passions, you have a sustainable and satisfying work life in place. This also means knowing when to “turn off” and divert your attention to family, friends, hobbies, or simply enjoying a nice meal.
The benefits of regular exercise have been well proven to boost your mood and overall physical health. Move your bones every day. This doesn’t mean going gung-ho on a fitness plan you will abandon after a week. Tailor a workout plan that makes you feel good and serves as an outlet to stress. We recommend scheduling a gym session without your mobile in hand. In line with this, one of the greatest perks of our program is that we schedule weekly workout sessions and plan a surprise element focused solely on the mind and body during our three-month program which has received glowing reviews from even the toughest of Founders to crack. And remember -physical activity like walking the stairs, taking a brisk stroll around the block, and light stretching are daily ways to move your body- which is important if when you’re behind a desk all day.
Remember to Eat
One minute it is 8:00 a.m. and the next thing you know it is 4:30 p.m. You´re tired, you’re cranky, and you’re about to get “hangry”. Naturally, this doesn’t put you in the most productive state. Even on those hectic days where a ten-minute break to shovel down a salad or sandwich seem impossible, it is important to remember to eat. Not only as fuel for your body but for your mind. Keep healthy snacks available to chow down on for the days with no breathing room. Eating gives you the energy and boost you need to get your work done. And hangry doesn’t look good on anyone!
Don’t Overextend Yourself
Be aware of your limits. Often times, when we are pumped up we tend to overbook our calendar, go for an intense workout and over commit- which only leaves us drained and sick. Make meaningful, sustainable actions that are sensible. Align them with your business goals and create harmony between the two.
Ultimately, it all boils down to focusing on your needs while listening to your body. So, give yourself what you need to be at your best everyday — some days it’s a strenuous workout and others it’s an early night even if all deliverables haven’t been met. And sometimes it is indulging in that special treat. Follow your intuiton and remember that it is never too late to start your day over.
